TranzAlpine, New Zealand (+ Booking Tips)

Before we started our road trip on New Zealand south island. We opted for the KiwiRail scenic train journey, the TranzAlpine line from Christchurch to Greymouth.

The train conditions are good and very comfortable. The food sold in their cafe are also affordable and nice. There are air conditioned carriages with wide panoramic window and open air viewing carriages, both allowing you to enjoy the epic scenery.

It was a pleasant ride, we enjoyed it a lot.

*It’s also very convenient to pick-up our rental car at Greymouth. There are a few car rental services counter located at Greymouth Railway Station (e.g. Budget, Avis,…).

Booking Tips:-

  • If you book it in New Zealand, they offer cheaper tickets i.e. the WebStarter & Starter ticket (*with different term) as shown in the screen capture below.
  • So if you are outside New Zealand, book using VPN and change your IP address to one that is of New Zealand. By doing so, the system will think that you are booking from New Zealand.
  • Or, you can ask someone you know which happen to be in New Zealand help you to book it before you are there.
